I'm not sure for existing orders, but I think if you have a redeemed/applied gift card then it will be automatically applied to your next order(s) until it is used up. You need to redeem/apply it so that it shows up as credit on your account. On Amazon.com, go to Your Account --> Apply a Gift Card to Your Account.
