Not quite sure, what you mean by that. They are "real" buttons with rather firm action. Their position is obviously different from older Kindles. The lower part of the Sony chassis is pretty wide, so it offers excellent real estate to hold it one-handedly with your thumb in the front (operating those <>) and the rest of your hand on the back.
