I actually discovered it from an article in Business Week about how the keyboard software is provided by the phone manufacturer or other third party, and that Google's own KB was limited to 'their' own hardware until recently. I imagine keyboards made by the same maker as the OS are more refined, explaining why the typing experience is better on iOS, Windows, and Google hardware like the Nexus. So it wasn't really an Android issue, per se, or at least it isn't anymore, for me anyway.
