Sorry, there is a option to show ads. Jack had this enabled, so Kobo showing him an ad was reasonable. He has now turned this off. If he gets an ad now, then he can complain about that. As long as Kobo respect the option, that is all that is needed.

To me the real problem is how the ad was displayed. I can understand Kobo wanting to display the ad during the sync, but while actually reading is rude. And what Jack reported is at odds with how Kobo have stated it should work. I don't know what is going on there.
