Just downgrade to 5.3.4 and then apply the Jailbreak and Bridge...it will stay jailbroken even if you upgrade to 5.3.8 (so far). If you want to adjust margins, stay at 5.3.4 and add the JBPatch hack which also includes hyphenations on mobi files...you will want to keep your PW from auto-updating so use KUAL and add the BackDoorLock hack. You can then go merrily on your way!

P.S.- Amazon can't 'turn on' your wifi. The update had probably downloaded earlier and was waiting for a quiet time to run.
