Yes, the desktop app will update the database to the latest version even if it doesn't update the firmware. The update to the calibre driver for this and 2.9.0 is already checked in and will be in the next build. In the meantime, you can safely set the "Attempt to use newer firmware" (or something like that) in the driver configuration. This will work with no problems.
