Nothing of my own to contribute at this time, but I do have a suggestion.
Take a look at Font websites for: dingbats, webdings, ligatures, embellishments, symbols. These are some of the search terms you can find scalable designs under. While most are quite simple, they can include extremely detailed designs (like in the Zentangle).
Also, don't overlook different types of creative software's "bits and pieces" that might be directly usable. For instance, many art programs offer brushes which are just small images.
Or various effects and/or brushes are mathematical formulas that can be plugged in/exchanged (take a look around DeviantArt.com).
2D and 3D architectural programs and 3D modelling software use libraries of objects. For the sake of ease and data transfer, their is a common object file type extension that they all use (which escapes me at the moment).
Anyway, there are probably a lot more sources for parts and inspiration than you've taken a look at so far.Hopefully my comments will provide some hints on where to continue your exploring.

Thanks for your feedback. Every note, help and insperation is welcome

I checked out DeviantArt myself already and have a picture in mind that could probably look great on a cover... just wait and see
