I've read the series, and while I do think it could be standalone, IMO it would all make more sense if read in order with the series:
1] Obsidian
2] Onyx
3] Opal
3.5] Obsession
4] Origin
and because I haven't read it yet but know what the story is about, I would say to read the Shadows novella which is technically 0.5, but I would read it after Opal as well, JMO
