Reading glasses are preferable. I've got a set of Visualites that work very well for me. Not heavy. Don't slip.
For extremely small type, such as some dictionaries I use a dome magnifier. It's not only powerful, but it focuses the ambient light onto the page.
If those don't work for you, get a projector. Go tall, not small. Read your books up on the wall.
