Most of the stores have new contracts with Random House (Random Penguin), the publisher for the series, that allow discounting. Titles from these publishers have been dropping quite a bit over the past few weeks. As you say the new season of HBO's AGoT doesn't air until spring (and S3 home video not until Feb 2014) so I don't think that's a reason at all.
