I've made the exact opposite experience. The cheapest option to send a Kindle to Europe from the US cost around $25 using USPS. The other way around it costs 3,45 € when sent as a "large letter" (which is perfectly ok for a Kindle*). As a package, it'd cost around 16 € to the US.

All prices for Germany, using either Deutsche Post or DHL.

(*) I've done that, but only within the EU. Not sure about how customs would react to it when sent to the US.
