I do it a slightly convoluted way but seems to work pretty well. Images can be a problem.
I open the article as full html, then save as webpage complete. Open the file with Libreoffice and delete unnecessary links info etc then save.

using calibre I add the article using add book then convert to mobi (for kindle) and send to device.

Images are often thumbnails so i have to go to each image in the online article load full versions using save as replace the thumbnail file in the associated folder where you saved the article.

Some websites are much easier than others. Some it is easier to copy the article and paste into wordprocessor document and convert using calibre.

I see now that science direct has a mobi/ epub converter built in. Hopefully other people will follow suite
