Even if you get up and go outside, and even if you just check the phone, you are still disturbing others. Looking at a smartwatch in a dark cinema would still disturb others.
And you don't have to have a big phone. If the screen of the smartwatch is big enough for you to read messages, they why would you have a phone that is too big to remove from your pocket?
