Once you visit the library, the books you open appear on the home screen? Do any other tiles appear as you use the other functions such as the web browser or games? Does it remember the reading status of your books?

In the case of the Touch, it doesn't recognise the card at all when powered off and on. For you, it is seeing the card and the books are still there. It just isn't building the home screen properly.
