I have wifi and internet, however, if I attach the kobo to the computer, it automatically pushes the latest firmware onto my Kobo, no questions asked. It then prompts me to enter my account info in order to complete the set up. I had a problem recently where I couldn't get past the log in screen (Kobo's problem, not mine), and it would not let me use the Kobo until I set it up with my user account. It continually prompted me to connect either by desktop or by wifi, but would not let me pas that screen until I did. As I could not get it to accept my username and password (both of which were correct), I couldn't access any books. I could not access the reader other than to tell it how I was going to connect.

So, if I get the firmware version 2.4.X and overlay it onto my reader, it will still prompt me to connect via wifi or desktop, again pushing the latest version of firmware onto my reader without my consent. And then I'm back to where I started.
