Maybe you had the Nook before 2.1.0 was put out in May and so you never saw all the changes? It's possible earlier firmware versions lacked the software back button.

I tried the "Smithsonian Channel" when I first got my HD+ last November and I've tried a few times since then. I guess I just haven't tried it lately. I've got it installed now.

The white arrow at the bottom isn't there all the time. Usually, any app that runs, hides it. With the stock Android arrow, the app has to be running in full-screen mode to hide it.
