There might be a way to cheat around this if you have a PC on your university network, as most do. You might set up Connectify Me (Google it) and rebroadcast your own short range WiFi network.

Having suggested this I advise you to first ask around the university's IT department/Local chapter of the society of technomages who wish they employed as much power as the technocrats who proceeded them and see if they have a preferred method and casually ask if Connectify Me might be a way you can get around this... Some universities can be a little "squirrelly" about you broadcasting your own network, but if they don't have an explicit policy against it, you implement decent security, and only have it up long enough for the occasional update there should be no problem, and likely no one would take any notice.

Worth a shot.
