I don't like them either. And unlike a Kindle Serial, you have no idea what you'll be charged to read the entire thing (a K. Serial is a single charge, updates in place and eventually gets you the full novel, usually at about 1/2 what it sells for once complete, which is a great deal). I've seen some have one or two free episodes, then charge $1 to $3/episode, with no end in site. Often the entire total runs to the $10-$30 range (yes, I've seen some that high. it's ridiculous). Sure, they can claim that 99 cents is the lowest that they can charge -- but Amazon doesn't force them to break up a book into 30 episodes, either. In fact, they can update in place, just as a Kindle serial does, and give the updates to everyone, if they really wanted to do so.
