I don't know that Amazon is the bad guy in particular, but I think it would be naive to assume that a proprietary format was either an afterthought or merely a chance for Amazon to explore more sophisticated formatting options. Locking in the casual user who can't be arsed is what virtually every major player wants.
On the other hand, one problem with epub is that high-level vendors (and therefore de facto publishers) like to create their own specialized versions (kepub, etc.), which undermines standardization as well.
