If you are writing for the market or not writing what is true to you then you should get a new job, politician, lawyer, CEO.

The poet mentioned here already knew herself but was not being honest and (at least according to the op) harmed her writing.

I'm heard this over and over and over.

In order to be a writer (especially a poet) one must remove all the masks. Otherwise they are wasting everyone's time.
