KF8 was more than just epub in a different container. It also had the ability to contain multiple formats internally and supports some formatting options from the MOBI format that aren't part of epub.
Again, I don't see it as malice. It's easy enough to convert to MOBI (which is sufficient for basic reading needs) and they do nothing to prevent you from doing so... in fact, if I were attributing malice I'd be more likely to point to the Nook (more likely, but still don't), which only lets you use part of the internal storage for side-loaded content -- the Kindle easily allows you to use ALL side-loaded content.
I think you're trying to hard to make them out to be the bad guys.
