I'm not sure it is like this. Amazon introduced KF8/AZW3 and this is almost the same as EPUB (just a little difference). So Amazon could also joined EPUB (with own DRM) besides MOBI. But the choose its on format to to discourage users from using other sources. That's how i see this.
