But without any indicator of dialog - quotation marks, dashes, whatever - I have to waste my time deciphering whether or not what I'm reading is being spoken or just thought by the character. That in turn detracts from the writing because the author himself/herself is causing me to lose focus on the actual storyline.
Add to that the difficulties in formatting that often occur when books are converted into ebooks - lack of scene ending hints, loss of italics, for example - and it creates even more problems.
