An alternative to the Nokia 770 would be to buy a N800 and physically remove the camera. I have never heard of anyone doing this, but it should be possible. The 770/N800 really is probably the best fit to your needs. FBReader works great on my 770. I don't read PDFs on mine, but I have seen reports of happy PDF readers - even on the small screen.
