Thanks everybody for the suggestions so far. I'm going to start with
The Basilisk Station (although every time I hear that name I think Harry Potter (which I love, BTW). The description made it sound like there was some backstory that came from another series but since so many are recommending it as a first book, it seems to be a standalone.
