Tubemonkey explained it, but may not have directly answered a couple of your questions. Once you buy the Kindle edition and the Audible audiobook, you own both a Kindle edition and an Audible audiobook. You can read the Kindle edition on any device that supports it and you can listen to the Audible audiobook on any device that supports it, independently of each other. The "magic" in WhisperSync for Voice is that is synchronizes your position between the ebook and the audiobook, so that you can read the first three chapters of a book on K4NT and then when you fire up Audible on whatever device, it will pick up with chapter 4 of that book. There is an additional feature if you own a Kindle Fire called Immersive Reading where you listen to the audiobook and read the Kindle edition at the same time, sort of like reading to a child.
