Are you sure you're not confusing Kobo with Nook? Because I don't see any closed system on my Kobo. The ebooks bought from kobobooks work just fine on my Sony. The ones bought from the Sony store ... oh, wait! there's no Sony store for ebooks in France (though there's a partnership with another bookseller).

As much as I like my 650, there was no store integration before the T2 (on the T1, the link was leading nowhere) and there is no French dictionary. So in France, the Sony products are racing with some disadvantages. The good software and the evernote integration seem to have been selling points. On a French Sony forum I can see several people who were expecting some frontlight on the T3. I have no idea whether it's going to sell well here

Edit: from the way I use it, the communication with Calibre seems as good with Kobo as with Sony.
