Ensure you have your settings to allow for coupon codes.
Go to Account Settings Page:
Checkout for eBook purchases
Option 1 Show me Quick Buy — Charges are applied to the credit card we have on file
Option 2 Show me standard Checkout — More options for applying other payment methods including promo codes and eGift cards
Then when you click on Buy Now for a book you will be taken to a Confirm Purchase page. Below the credit card information and billing address there is a Redeem any Gift Cards or Promo Codes section. It may say
Have a gift card or promo code? Use it here Click on link and a field will display to enter the coupon code. Made sure you click Apply and the amount shows the discount before clicking Buy Now on the purchase page.
If it says
Have a gift card? Use it here (without the "or promo code" part) it is
NOT an eligible book

Contest codes are one time use only. Once someone uses them, that's it.
Kobo often gives other codes that are good once per account. Plus they sometimes give out codes which are reusable, but those are more rare.
