Do you have a tile for Calibre on your Start screen (many ways to get to the Start screen, but just hit the Windows Key, for example)?
I take it you have put Shortcuts to Calibre on your Desktop and you ended up with two, being for different versions?
If so just delete the shortcuts off the desktop (right click, select Delete), which I think you may have done already, and start Calibre from its tile on the start page. See if version 1.0 starts.
I don't know what your "Tools/d/loads panel" is in Windows 8, can you explain a little more? Is this some third party add-on, or is it something in Windows 8 I have yet to discover

I cannot see the "Fuzezip ad button" on the Calibre download page, nor do I recall such a thing coming up during installation of version 1.0 (but I may have just automatically ignored it). May be cause for worry if it is only you experiencing that.
