Have you told CC that it can manage CBZ and and CBR? Settings -> Book formats & folders (the first preference in the settings display).
This is the trick I missed. I was thinking I was stuck with only the formats already enabled because they were the only ones showing up as I tried to "read" books.

I have several than handle cbz, which I've been accessing by side-loading the cbz and cbr files manually. It's just nicer that now I can manage the comics library via calibre and calibre companion as well.
It was my oversight. Awesome that this can be done!
