My problem was that it had continued to give the same error after installing libxtst6 on ubuntu 13.04.
My mistake, I'd done a sloppy google search for libXt.so.6
If anyone else ever has this problem, it's not libxtst6, it's libxt6, which I swear I had tried first with an error. Must have been a typo! :P
In total, in get calibre-server working on my headless ubuntu 13.04 server I needed to install:
fontconfig
libxt6
libltdl7
...and their dependencies, which were few.
My bad. Thanks for all your work, Kovid, sorry for wasting your time with this.
