Very few bookstores guarantee to make prior purchases available indefinitely. I entirely agree that being able to re-download prior purchases is a convenience, but it's not one which should be relied upon.

Make sure you have good backups. Your comment about losing your books in the event of a hard drive failure is a little alarming; I'd suggest having copies in at least three places, one of which is off-site.
