Disk drives are cheap now days ($60 a Terabyte. I remember buying 40 Megabyte drives at $400 each and thinking 'I got a DEAL' ). I keep my originals for all the reasons listed above.
Unless you proof every paragraph, you can't be sure that a Calibre conversion did not have a glitch (there are not many, but , Oh Wow!, when some happen). Use the spare drive for an Archive and Backup (and remember to safely store it separate from your equipment)
