Once Calibre has its copy it no longer cares about the originals so it is not necessary to keep them. You should, however, still keep backups somewhere.

Some people like to keep the originals in case of a disaster or a mistake using Calibre. I think the feeling being that they have more control when they handle the files themselves. Others (like myself) are happy to just have backups of the Calibre library folder as the contingency against failure.
