Virtual libraries are basically saved searches. They allow you to get a cleaner view of your library based on some criteria. Very useful for large or diverse libraries. Not super useful for small libraries. And of course you can do similar things with saved searches, the tag browser, etc. Virtual Libraries are just one more option available to you.
