No - there is no automatic update. It is up to you to decide if you want to take any particular update. You can tell what version you are running by looking at the bottom left of the main calibre window.
Many people only take the occasional update. You can also switch of the update notifications under Preferences->Interface->Behavior if you do not want to see them.
