Of all the recommendations, the one I don't see is for the Liaden Universe series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Not "hard sf", but certainly space opera, and the one series I keep going back to time and again, and that never disappoints. Start with
Agent of Change (free) or
Balance of Trade.
