Hmmm... not "there may be" - "there is". Cracked screen substrate.
Google for "Kindle broken screen" or so, and you will see that they all look pretty much like your screen. Your only option is to replace the screen - or the whole device. If you decide for the latter, you may want to announce that you have a Kindle with a broken screen to give away (say, for the cost of shipping). It is still a valuable device for some of the developers here.
