Many of those reviews are done by people that haven't held it. But, even those that have used the thing for 10 mins and wrote a review. As a kindle user I don't have this problem. Yes, there are probably a few, those with real small hands that might not be able to find a comfortable way to hold it.

That is incorrect. The Kindle will read nonDRMed mobipocket format ebooks without conversion or problem. There are many ebook sources that provide this.
For DRMed books there is a utility that allows you to determine the Mobipocket ID for your Kindle and buy DRMed ebooks then use "kindlefix" on them to read them on the kindle. They are still DRM protected.
If you don't plan to format shift or break DRM and be able to shop at multiple places your best bet is a mobi supporting device such as CyBook, iLiad, BeBook/Hanlin V3, DR1000. Less selection will be secure Adobe ebooks that only the Sony 505 will be able to read.
Anyway... I just wanted to correct your understanding that you can "only" get ebooks from Amazon for the Kindle.
