Is it really so strange that recs from fellow online community users are used more than recs from family/local friends? I don't read the same kinds of books that my family reads, not even slightly. A lot of us find our "tribe" online based on a shared interest in particular kinds of books, and the sample was drawn only from people who use a book-related forum (mobileread).

I always laugh when deadtree panickers start shrieking "BUT HOW WILL PEOPLE DISCOVER BOOKS NOOOOOW?" Do any of us really have a shortage of TBR/wishlist books? My problem lies more along the lines that my current TBR+wishlist will last me at least five years.
