Try setting the cover instead of getting the metadata, that should have details on the error message. I've added the code to get error details when reading metadata fails as well, but you will have to wait for the next build for that.
The fan fiction line implies you do have the plugin (or some other plugin that uses that file) installed, it doesn't come from calibre itself.
