Screens are the issue. There have been several different screens used on the K3 over its lifetime, each of which has a different set of waveform characteristics. If you use a screen which has different characteristics to those stored on the EPROM on the main circuit board, it will work, and "black" and "white" will display correctly (ie you'll be able to read text OK), but you won't have any grey scales, so pictures won't display properly. That's the main "gotcha" when it comes to playing "mix and match" with a K3. You can safely swap anything else (keyboard, battery, etc), but the screen has to match what the motherboard is expecting.
