The Dragon Griaule is just plain incredible. The book is a collection of novellas and short stories that Shepard has written over the years. The first of these, "The Man Who Painted the Dragon Griaule" (
extended excerpt at Baen), won the world Fantasy Award for best novella in 1985. In my personal opinion, every story save one ("Liar's House") is among the best Fantasy I've ever read. That story is good, just not as great as the rest.
What seems weird is that even though there are 20+ year-old stories included, the collection itself was just published barely over a year ago. And while the hardcover is relatively expensive, it's only
$4.99 for Kindle. So, it's not like they're reviving a long-out-of-print rarity. Maybe it's just become a modern classic that quickly. Or does England not know about Lucius Shepard?
