Most readers? ... probably not. But there's a good chance it could work on any reading apps (iBooks?) or (future?) devices based on WebKit (which means it very well could be viable when converting ePubs to Kindle books, too).
Still ... you're right. It probably should be considered "bleeding-edge" for now. Suitable for personal experimentation at least.
To the OP: I'd probably check bug reports and the like for the version of Qt (or more specifically Qt's Webkit) your version of Sigil is built with. Sounds like a very likely "it's a Qt bug" issue to me.
