Possibly that the software must work with the hardware? Much the same reason I can't install Android from my Nexus tablet onto my laptop or Windows 8.1 from my laptop onto my Nexus tablet.

Perhaps you should try browsing various forums for DD-WRT, Tomato, Open-WRT and similar router software. There were quite a few people who managed to brick routers when installing some firmware versions and those were ones that were intended for that hardware. Also look for "JTAG".
