Both my Aura and mini have these problems. My T1 also has the occasional page turn problem with the buttons. I've learned to live with it. My 600 and 350 and my mothers kindle do not and never have had these problems, nor my tablets.
The big advantage of the kobo for me is the tap to change page although the wide bezel of the Aura makes it a tad difficult one handed.
I'm pretty sure you are tapping/swiping just fine. Not meant to be a test in precision I am sure. One example is that with the mini you can tap 3/4 on the slider bar and it will take you back to the front. Again on the mini you can tap on the far right and it will page backwards instead of forwards about every 8-10 pages, although this seems a bit better now.
But they are what they are. I bought the Aura because I was going to work in a northern small community for 6 months and wanted a new toy to play with
Don't actually regret it, but not particularly proud of the choice as I already had a mini and should have known better
I think you would be happier with your preferred color, but then again what happens if you get another faulty screen
