I am not prone to headaches, but I started getting an instant headache trying to read on any tablet of that generation. (Resolution of 166ppi on the ones we looked at.)
Fast forward a year, I was surprising hubby for Xmas with a Nexus 7 (216ppi), and testing it to be sure it wasn't a problem unit and setting it up so it would be ready to go for him on Xmas morn, with some of his favorite apps on and all. As bad I wanted a tablet, and as much as I liked the speed and full Android of the tablet, my eyes felt rather strained doing the set up and testing, because the text was still pixelated, and therefore fuzzy. I did not buy one.
Then along came BN's announcement about adding Google Play to their Nook HD series. I got the Nook HD+ (254ppi). Finally, I had a tablet I could web browse on and even read a little. Yet, reading a book on the Nook is still not entirely comfortable, because I can still see pixels around the edges of text.
I have my Note, and at 289ppi, I can read entire books comfortably. But the screen is too small for some things.
The problems in comfort decrease as the ppi goes up. What more experiment do I need, for heavens sake? I'm glad for you if you can read on low resolution devices, it certainly gives you more shopping choices, but I can't read comfortably on them.
My Nexus 7 arrived today and is on the charger! I'm hoping it's an unflawed unit, because it's been a long, long wait. I think my eyes will be very happy with this, just as they are with my Kobo Aura. Now if only I could get a better resolution computer monitor!

You have a lot of data so the opinion is informed by a lot of data. I strongly suspect that this is not the case for most people.
What font size did you use to see pixel effects on the first Nexus 7? I just checked on mine and you must have extremely better eye sight than me to see it. If I look with the eyes 4 cm from the screen I can see some pixel effects.
