ixtab, thanks for your quick reply. didn't know the reason for the different displays for selection. I've learnt something new.

unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a display issue. for eg, the Display Options, once I've selected Display Collections Only, pressing the checkbox again would not change the display back. Similarly, after I've sorted by Publication Date, I was unable to sort by Title. I've restarted my KT, but the issues remain.
