Actually, I thought of that after I posted. Had you been on this side of the world, I would have suggested the island intimated in the DiCaprio film "The Beach." I used to spend months there when I first moved to Asia. These days unfortunately is has developed into an island with three villages, paved roads, 57 large resorts, and 150 bars. There is even a car rental agency. The picture below is how it looked back when I used to stay there...

Now I did spend two weeks touring France and slept several nights on the beach in St. Tropez which was a whole different experience. Waking in the morning to naked women sprawled about the place was an altogether more pleasant time in my life.
