Thanks, I've since done that, and it appears it is a problem with the graphics toolkit Calibre uses (Qt). Per Calibre developer: "Usually, Qt is updated to handle updates to operating systems, so calibre should automatically inherit the fix. Hpwever, that is not
likely to happen before the OS is released."

If anyone is using Mavericks, the work around is to do your editing in Calibre (if you do editing) open the folder where the book is stored, and manually move load the file to the device.
